Hi List,

I actually watched a YouTube clip the other day where the young presenter
in all sincerity believed that his vehicle's (it was a classic Land Rover
so not really a car but also not a truck or a SUV) engine was down on power
because it had holes in the exhaust causing a lack of back pressure. I
thought that sort of false myth died it years ago so I politely posted a
comment.

Elsewhere on the internet I found David Vizard being slagged off with one
person saying and others agreeing that he had 'never turned a wrench' etc.
I had to register and join the forum (some sort of Dodge or Chrysler BBS)
to not so much post a defence of his ability but to put the record straight
as to what he had done, albeit a long time ago.

As I have often told my wife in regard to YouTube clips is that sometimes
you have to be an expert to know that a YouTube clip is rubbish. If you're
not an expert you might be taken in by false information.

At one time in my day job I often found it was necessary to stand up for my
staff against unfair practice or criticism from other managers or even my
own senior managers. I used to tell them that I was prepared to put my
head on the block for them. Being British they knew enough of British
history that when a person put their head on the block in centuries past it
meant it was going to get chopped off. They knew my head wasn't going to
get chopped off but they understood I was putting my self, reputation, pay
bonuses and possibly my career to stand up for them - the risk and
potential cost was to myself, for themselves.

Here in England I occasionally write to my politically elected
representative to ask a question, make a complaint or pass an opinion. I
have also done the same to the leader of the opposition party or a
government minister or the prime minister. I've also posted comment on
YouTube and had to defend it on occasion. It might be a futile act on my
part, yet it might not be. Having been a Civil Servant I have seen sacks
of correspondence on a particular issue that not only diverted staff (such
as myself) from their regular task to drafting replies to that
correspondence, but forced a change in government policy.

I'm not sure what the behaviour of the average american is to a range of
opinions presented to them in the media. I figure everyone reading this is
a lot more than average even though I have not met most of you and don't
know what you look like (though I know what Billy Zoom looks like because
there is a photo of him taken by the author of a book on Nikon Cameras I
recently bought!). Still, it can be hard to know if everything presented
to you as a fact really is correct.

I do not support illegal immigration into my country or anyone else's.
This country does have a problem with illegal immigration and my personal
opinion is that if someone pays money to a criminal or organised criminal
gang to help them commit a crime (of illegal immigration) for personal
gain, then they do not have my sympathy or support. I don't believe that's
a harsh or ultra right wing policy but feel free to disagree. I believe
that America also has a problem with illegal immigration and as a
percentage by population it may or may not be worse than ours. What I do
think is that here in the UK we know near enough exactly how big that
problem is but I'm not sure your elected government does.

There seems to be some Americans (quite possibly a long younger than
ourselves) who believe Europe has sponged off America for their defence. I
would like to explain to them that the reason America had and still has so
many military bases in Europe was not to defend Europe for the Europeans
but to defend Europe to support the defence of America. Feel free to
google RAF Molesworth and RAF Greenham Common for an insight. Yes American
has and does spent more money on Defence than any other NATO country and I
suggest this is because America wants to be strong militarily for itself
and it is not and never has been to prop up Europe. For some older history
search 'thor missile bases uk'. If you want something more current search
RAF Menwith Hill on YouTube and google and ask yourself who benefits from
that RAF station. Above all though, ask yourself, as we might say, 'is
everything in the garden rosy?' Ask yourself if you need to put your head
on the block, write a letter or simply question whether what you are told
really is the truth, in your best interests, or be prepared to challenge an
ill-informed opinion or comment.

Not least you need to be getting out and driving your Spridgets, breaking
them and asking questions on the list about how to fix them.

Regards

Daniel.
