2023 VSCDA SpriteMidget Race Series Rules and Regulations

(Revision 5/16/23 rough draft)

I. Objective: Increase numbers for Racing Spridgets @ VSCDAEvents by having=

A. More cars, which, will allowmore wheel to wheel racing safely within Spr=
idget Classes (with classes forvarious levels of preparation).=20

B. Continued tradition establishedby Thickos through camaraderie and group =
get together (cook out lunch Saturdayand Sunday, British Pub Saturday eveni=
ng when a 3 day race weekend along with technical andmoral support through =
group).=20

C. Series Points developed fromEarlier Vintage Vee model. Including durabil=
ity (laps completed) from 1stSprint Race, Fastest time from 1st Qualificati=
on Race and Position for SpridgetRace in a best 2 out of 4 race weekends id=
entified in series.=20

D. To embrace vintage sports carracing philosophy and etiquette of VSCDA=E2=
=80=99s Driver Policy with an emphasis onSafety.=20

E. Encourage street Austin Healeys& MGs as spectators by offering special p=
arking near our Spridget Compoundinviting them to join in the fun and encou=
rage track touring session andassisting as crew.=20

II. VSCDA Sprite Midget Point Races 2023:=20

III. Racing Classes per VSCDA / SCCA (1972 Classifications Guidelinesfor Po=
ints and Awards) Revamp with 1972 GCR / PCS Focus. Our intent isto have any=
one interested in racing a Vintage Spridget to join us. This is adouble edg=
e sword since an individual may have their own personal opinion ofwhy they =
think they should or should not be in a certain class. Vintage Racinghas ma=
ny clubs throughout the US and Canada with different criteria than ours.We =
have 3 levels within 3 classes that should allow anyone interested in racin=
gto have a place to compete with other similar prepared racing Spridgets. W=
erecognize that everyone has an opinion of what is fair, based on their log=
ic.We have tried to make that more defined by 1972 SCCA GCR Specificationsd=
etailed, which is a VSCDA requirement. We would like to encourage placing t=
heproper designation on your car & when you register.=20

IV. SMRS 1972 SCCA GCR / PCS Highlight of Requirements.=20

A. Background: VSCDA definesRegulations for Group 2 cars like our Sprites a=
nd Midgets from the VSCDAWebsite and updated 3/28/22 titled TECHNICAL REQUI=
REMENTS FOR RACE CARS:=20

B. VSCDA - SCCA 1967 General CompetitionRules Appendix A/Article. Productio=
n Category Sports Cars (w/PCS sheets) andafter review, 1972 and prior cars =
homologated to similar regulations publishedby FIA and some other sanctioni=
ng bodies.=20

C. Objective: Now that we have acopy of SCCA=E2=80=99s 1972 GCR /PCS rev 1/=
73 we actually have facts on what wasrequired then vs what we heard or thou=
ght it might be. This document isavailable to anyone that would like an ele=
ctronic copy. The goal for thisdocument is to highlight requirements as of =
1972 GCR that would impact SquareBody Sprites and Midgets on common areas o=
f misunderstanding. For the sake ofcommonality and consensus within our gro=
up Mk1 Bug Eyes will also follow 1972GCR requirements, which is consistent =
with VSCDA requirements.=20

D. 1972 SCCA GCR Highlights (thefollowing highlights are for those wanting =
to run in ERA Correct 2E Bug Eye or2D Square Body class). Comments are in (=
 ) for clarification:=20

a. Interior:=20

i. Grills may not be removed=20

ii. Front signal light, lenses,bulbs must be removed and opening can be use=
d for venting brakes with maximum =C2=BCin wire mesh=20

iii. Headlight openings must becovered if not used for ducting air and must=
 be metal, fiberglass etc.=20

iv. Spoilers are permissible, butminimal (see additional details 1972 GCR)=
=20

v. Fenders maybe altered only toprovide for tire clearance, provided that t=
he fender opening profile, viewedfrom the side of the automobile is not cha=
nged. vi. Safety fuel tanks must beplace close to original position.=20

c. Tires, Wheels, Suspension:=20

i. Wheels maybe 1.5 inches widerthan specified. Wheels may not exceed +/- 2=
 inches track dimension. Center lockwheels and hubs is permitted within thi=
s track restriction (wire wheelcondition), (square bodied cars in the later=
 years had 4.5 inch wide rims so upto 6 inch wide rim is possible)=20

d. Engine Compartment:=20

i. Battery =E2=80=93 make or size ofbattery provided its voltage and locati=
on remains unchanged=20

ii. Generator / Alternator =E2=80=93Standard maybe replaced with generator =
or alternator of different make or sizeas long as location and drive are th=
e same. iii. Velocity stack and or cold airbox maybe used=20

iv. Transmission / Rear Axle =E2=80=93ratios as specified by SCCA (PCS) Str=
aight Cut Close Ratio accepted withdesignated ratios (theseratios were BMC=
=E2=80=99s Straight Cut Close Ratios)

 are allowed. The make of the distributoris free, provided installation doe=
s not require any modifications to theengine. Crankshaft triggering is spec=

E. Tire Specification requirementper VSCDA 8/1/2020:=C2=A0 Group 2: Vintage=
Production Production cars: Avon: CR6ZZ, ACB9 only (ACB10 not permitted) BF=

a. If you do not comply with 1972SCCA GCR and or PCS than you are not in 2E=

The above SMRS requirements were prepared in 2017 by StanMason and approved=
 by (Buzz Merchlewitz, Thad Evans, John Deikis and DougBruce). =C2=A0Since =

VI. Race Series Points 2022 awarded from accumulation of 2 ofthe 4 designat=
ed races of Gingerman, Black Hawk Farms, Pittsburgh GP andGrattan.=20

A. 1st Sprint Race (DurabilityPoints per class) represent 1/3 of total poin=
ts during race weekend. The First SprintRace is usually held on Saturday (m=
aximum 8 points). If a racer completes lessthan the most completed laps ava=
ilable by a similar class racer the resultswill be based on a percentage of=
 that 8 points rounded up. =C2=A0These points reward endurance. If the clas=
ssession has less than 8 laps and a competitor completed all laps available=
 theywill be awarded 8 points.=20

B. 1st Qualification (Fastest Timeper class): Points are awarded per C belo=
w except based on fastest time.=20

C. Sprite Midget Exclusive Race(Finishing Position per class): Points are a=
warded based on finishing position.First (8 points), Second (7), Third (6),=
 Fourth (5), Fifth (4), Sixth (3),Seventh (2) & all other finishers (1).=20

D. A racer can accumulate up to 16points for Qualification and Sprint Race =
along with additional points for theFeature Race or Exclusive Sprite Midget=
 Race. The maximum points awarded perrace weekend would be 24. The maximum =
accumulated in the best 2 out of 4 serieswould be 48 points.=20

E. A driver will not receive pointsfor a session in which they were involve=
d in an on track incident resulting ina disciplinary action from the VSCDA =
Drivers Committee.=20

F. If a driver enters all 4eligible race weekends he or she can throw out t=
he worst weekends, which willallow any mechanical or other issues to be dis=
counted. Final results will betallied from the 2 weekends with the most acc=
umulated points unless otherwise notifiedby racer.=20

G. An overall winner will beselected regardless of class based on a perfect=
 score of 48 points from 2 raceweekends. If more than one racer has highest=
 points accumulated it will beconsidered an overall winner tie.=20

H. Awards will be presented atGrattan per the above Class Categories at the=
 end of the last Group 2 race.=20

I. These awards are in the spiritof Vintage Sports Car Philosophy recognizi=
ng fun and durability by completingthe most laps per race weekend contribut=
ing 1/3 of total available.=20

V. Race Series Special Awards (these awards will be determinedby drivers an=
d crew and awarded with end of season awards):=20

A. Gary Kropf Spirit Award for Vintage Spridgets (Traveling LargePiston Awa=
rd). Criteria:=20

1. Fast, safe, courteous driver,(promotes the =E2=80=9Cvintage spirit=E2=80=
=9D)=20

2. Assists others within the paddock=E2=80=93 repairs, parts, advice. Willi=
ng to jump into help and assist other Spridgetmake the next session.=20

3. Quick to organize groupactivity =E2=80=93 brats for lunch =E2=80=9Call p=
ork weekend=E2=80=9D, watching other group races, fromthe best vantage poin=
ts, coordinating seating at dinner, etc.=20

4. Volunteers with the VSCDA oncommittees, and sub-committees=20

B. Jim Donato Sprite Midget Race Series Most Respected Driver Award(Traveli=
ng Steering Wheel in a display case Award) Criteria:=20

1. Predictable / Trusted (usesmirrors, points faster cars by, passes safely=
 and allows others room to pass andis always a defensive driver over winnin=
g at all cost), stays on racing lineexcept when car failures would leave fl=
uids on track or safety is a concern)=20

2. Objective: Listens to othersand approaches other drivers that may have a=
n issue with in an open and fairway. Can sit down with any driver and feel =
comfortable that they did the rightthing when on the track.=20

3. Observant: Looks forward toobserve incidents and flag stations, inspects=
 car between sessions for safetyto avoid causing accidents to others on tra=
ck.=20

4. Respectful: Avoids Red Mist,which is identified as an emotional win at a=
ll costs attitude and maintainsVintage Spirit Philosophy.=20
