The cost per watt of solar has been coming down very slowly. A doubling would
be a game changer. Another factor not mentioned often is that Solar panels
provide the most power during peak demand periods - when everyone uses
air-conditioning on hot sunny days. That is a big advantage as a supplemental
energy source.
Wind tends to operate on a more random basis 24/7, so for wind to be effective
it needs to be stored.
I do not know if it is still true, but years ago I read we have an excess of
electric at night - good for some plug in cars!!

Somewhere recently, I read that there is research that could lead to a
doubling of the now low efficiency of solar-electric cells. That would
change the equation completely.
