I'll chime in that we sell LOTS of very expensive fuel pumps (lots 
for SAABs, too;). The fuel pump will wear more quickly not just 
because of crud in the tank, but it also needs a volume of fuel to 
keep itself cool. The fuel returning from the engine can be quite 
warm, and all FI returns lots of fuel to the tank.
