One of my wife's friends bought a Prius, mostly for commuting to work.  She 
did not get a $5000 rebate because of her tax bracket (which she did not 
understand when she bought it).  It runs on battery only when driving at low 
speed around town, which she does not do much.  On the highway she is 
getting 23 mpg.  She considers it an expensive mistake.
