Couple years ago my boss told me he was approached by a guy that wanted to do
research on accupuncture and brain activity. He was warned about using metal
near the magnet. He swore the needles were 100% gold and therefore
non-magnetic. So my boss walked him into the MRI room and activated the magnet.
It's a good thing, no one was between the magnet and the "gold" needles.
Unfortunately, that kind of thing causes the techs to have to shut down the
magnet entirely to remove the metal. This can take between 6 hrs and 3 days,
depending on the size and strength of the magnet system.
