Rats are smarter than dogs and cats. If a rat sees another rat squashed in a
trap, it will learn to avoid traps. This is especially true if you keep
using the same trap in the same area. Disguising the trap will help, but the
humane traps tend to work better because they associate them with the smell
of food rather than the sight of a dead rat. You can always just dump your
catch in the dumpster behind the local McDonalds or WallMart where it's not
your problem. Rats also make great pets if you get them young enough.
