Hi Kirk,
The crunching is probably that your clutch wasn't fully disengaging.

I had problems with my throw out bearing going out pre-maturely. I think I
have solved the problem. Per Frank I shortened the slave rod to spec and I
also found an old throw out bearing that I
had amongst some parts. I believe that this TB may be of better
construction than many, if not just about all of the new ones that are
sourced today. It looked solid as well. . as much as one might be able to
tell by looking at it.

On this last TB failure. . I was a few miles from home and had to drive the
car back home by killing the engine and starting it again. The gear box
also took a beating. I was not up for a $70 + tow bill being as close to
home as I was. .so I did whatever it took to get the car back into my
garage.

Since then, shifting into first and then to second. . I get a crunch.
Sometimes, I am able to avoid this. . depending on the feel of the gear
shift and the way that I am shifting. But for the most part I am often
crunching a slight bit into first and then crunching from first to second
with all the other two gears working as normal.

I plan to install a 5 speed. . but I am waiting for some money to come in
order to be able and do so. As such I have not been to concerned about the
rib case.

But I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what I may have done to my
current gear box. . what is going wrong with first and second?

What got hurt inside the box when I was driving it home that day?

PS
I snapped my radio antenna off by having the car too close to the garage
door when it came down. Out came the old golf clubs again. . those tubes
are great to have for repairs like this. I was able to cut out a section of
tube and make a repair. . to the point that looking at it, you would not
know that it was ever snapped. . nothing stands out as looking crazy at
least! Sometimes those old golf clubs really come in handy. .. along with
some JB Weld to make sure everything stays in place!
