When I built my ' 67 Midget vintage race car with LCB we made a 2" diameter
exhaust pipe straight all the way past (under) the diff and then heated it
and bent it slightly upwards so that all the hangers placed it as close to
the body as possible. The only problem was that when I jacked the car up
and supported it with jack stands to the body, the rear end would drop down
until it laid on the exhaust pipe. It put a strain on the pipe and the
hangers but never caused a problem, but still... I wonder how much exhaust
extraction penalty there would be with a pipe that went over the axle like
the stock set-up? Probably minimal.

If you have a single piece of pipe running from the header, over the axle
to the muffler, you might have a problem removing it unless you can get the
car high enough in the air. My cars go only as high as my jack stands, so
it might be a problem. Just thinking ahead.

My next design will be as straight 2" pipe to the rear bulkhead hanger, a
piece that goes OVER the axle, then a 2' piece that exits just past the
rear valence. It will use the stock hanger from the trunk floor. It will be
removable so it can be replaced with a Cherry Bomb glasspac for when I race
at tracks that have noise limits, when I take the car to shows, and when I
run it up at home in my garage. That should solve all my problems.
