If it's ticking, it's pumping to one extent or another and disconnecting fuel 
line at the carb while energizing the fuel pump and checking for flow will tell 
the tale.

insfar as the "sudden" engine stop is concerned......and this takes a bit of 
remembering, John.

Was it a sudden and complete cut-out with the tach concurrently going to "Zero" 
(electrical) or a sudden but more "slowly"
occuring failure (fuel starvation)..,,,

We would be talking the difference as in...
 
a "spontaneous" military ordinance detonation (bright white) or "slower" 
petroleum/kerosene explosion (orange).

The initial PerTronix installed chafed a misplaced wire and the motor suddenly 
quit within 1000 miles. The tach went suddenly to zero concurrently so...  :):)
