So what's the big deal with the Beatles. They just had their bums whupped
by a grand 92-year old lady who had not had a #1 hit since 1952. That was
TEN YEARS before the Beatles ever recorded a song. In doing so, she became
the oldest artist-and she truly is an artist-to have a #1 hit in the history
of the industry!

Yes, Dame Vera Lynn, "the Forces sweetheart" in the darkest days of World
War II, when the British were fighting alone for their survival, has just
outsold the Beatles as the #1 album. "We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of
Vera Lynn", has 24 songs that will forever bring back memories of wartime
Britain, including "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "White Cliffs
of Dover".

None of her songs will ever bring out more goose bumps or put so many lumps
in throats as "We'll Meet Again (don't know where, don't know when). For so
many, the words evoke sad memories of a final farewell as young men went in
harm's way, never to return, and has since been a melancholy reminder of
when a flickering flame of a love long past was snuffed out.

When Dame Vera's album became the first time a 90+ year old artist reached
the top 20, people were flabbergasted. No one could understand how the
album hit the top 10, and they thought it had surely plateaued. But it
hadn't. It went on to outsell the Beatles' collection, and that of the
"Arctic Monkeys". You are right, Dame Vera had never heard of them, and
thought the name downright uncomfortably cold!

Alas, Dame Vera never made any money out of her historic recordings. She
received a paycheck, and all the royalties went to Decca!
