Well, it was nowhere near as bad as I feared, and I got myself all worked up 
over nothing.
I drilled the heads off the dead screws giving access to the shafts.  One 
came out immediately with a vicegrip, the other needed some heat and PB 
Blaster.  The backing plates for the hinges are threaded with no captive 
nuts.  They are *very* thin, so it does not take much to break the screws 
loose.
The hardware stores do not carry 1/4x28 Philliips screws with pointy ends.
