Thanks for posting. I have been using one of the products listed under "Plain
Phosphoric Acid" for many years, Dupont's 5717S Metal Prep which is available
from auto-body jobber supply stores. It is not a short cut to getting rid of
rust, but I will testify to how good of a preservative it is. I dilute 3 to 1
with water as recommended and wet a scotchbrite pad with it to scrub the bare
metal. It is supposed to be washed off but can be left on for protection and
will dry to a haze. My 67 Midget has not had paint on it for more than 20 years
in three different unheated garages, and it still looks great. I will go over
it like this twice a year, and she's ready to work on at any time. I suspect
only the racers can understand this level of procrastination. It's just a
street car!
