A few years back someone on the list who does thermal dynamics (or  
something closs to that) did an analysis of a stock vertical vs a  
stock horizontal and there is no difference.  The reason for going to  
the cross flow was to lower the bonnet line was the claim.  You can  
get Al radiators and ones with more tubes.  My poor memory is that  
there were mixed results with these changes.

I still use the stock vertical radiator with the 1275 for what ever  
that is worth.
