Usually the layshaft is galled and the layshaft roller bearings are toast.
That's most of the characteristic whine. Add in a new pilotshaft and
tailshaft bearing, new synchros, and a cursory look at the other mainshaft
roller bearings will finish a "good enough" rebuild.
