I imagine that they were attempting to emulate some of the effect of the 
paint-job on the Gulf Porsches or even on some of the green and yellow Loti. 
I don't think he succeeded. A guy in my local Miata club had an early Miata 
that he painted the Gulf Porsche colour scheme. UGGGH!!!
