I've used Diesel fuel in the past on some parts in the past. Worked great.

Subject: Cosmoline removal

So I'm popping some new bearings into a 1275 last
night, they are NOS Vandervells slobbered in
cosmoline. I do the first 2, cleaning with WD40 and
lots of rag action. They mic perfectly, all seems
good. I decide to try brake cleaner on the 3rd set,
cosmoline comes right off, so does a little of the
tri-metal! Not good, so I pop in some Israeli
tri-metals that are supposed to be pretty good instead
(I hope). But the question is - what's good to clean
off cosmoline? Should the brake cleaner have taken of
the top coat of metal??? Were the NOS vandies too old?

Ron
