Couple of things then I'm off my soapbox 'cause this
is a really complex issue (Frank, I love you man, but
#4 is true; "You" doesn't mean you - it means all of
us):
1) The American companies are nowhere near the most
short sighted. I can't say more than that.
2) The companies who are big in China don't just make
a phone call and start getting stuff. Their
US/British/German quality people, operations people,
and senior management are usually embedded in the
factories.
3) Being placed in a Chinese factory for 6 months is
considered the fast track in many companies. How you
do in 6 months is what they look at. Since they are
paying the workers $17 per week, the more you produce,
the better your numbers look, the faster you get out
of there, and the better your new position back home.
So the cycle of crap self-sustains.
4) Nails, tools, etc. are trickle-down problems
perpetuated by the birdbath in the yard. The Chinese
birdbath rusts in your yard because you bought it and
put it there. You don't need a birdbath. You wouldn't
pay triple what you did for it if it were made in
Cleveland, so it's made in China so you'll buy it. You
don't need a HD plasma TV. If it were made in the US,
it would cost $15,000 today. I know a company in FL
that made military HD displays in 1995 or so, they
were $50K. They tried to make TVs, they were $20K. The
market study said no one would buy them unless they
were under $4K. Guess which country can make them for
25% of what they cost in Florida...
