Vintage racing enthusiasts and San Francisco history buffs, thank you for
wading through the rumors and speculation. This is an official update on the
planning of the Golden Gate Grand Prix. The event has been postponed until
early summer, 2008. The postponement was necessary to establish a strong
working relationship with a sanctioning body and for further planning with the
city of San Francisco and with potential corporate sponsors. The board of the
Golden Gate Grand Prix Association is pleased to announce that we have entered
into a partnership with Historic Motor Sports Association. HMSA will handle
the planning and execution of the race itself and the GGGPA will focus on
promotion and community/sponsor relations. Participant and car eligibility
information is still being determined, so please check back here periodically
or sign up below for automated email updates.
The original Guardsmen Cup Race was held in Golden Gate Park in 1952, 1953 &
1954. This new event will be designed as a tribute to the original, with
pre-'60 sports cars in 5 groups competing in era and displacement specific
races. The Golden Gate Grand Prix Association is the only vintage racing
association affiliated with The Guardsmen in recreating this historic event
and the only vintage racing association with a permit to conduct an actual
race in Golden Gate Park.
The 2008 Golden Gate Grand Prix will be free to the public and proceeds from
the concessions, entry fees and sponsorship will be donated to various San
Francisco-based charities. The Golden Gate Grand Prix Association has filed
for 501-(C)3 status and is a non-profit organization whose members are
volunteers. For more information on HMSA visit: http://www.hmsausa.com/
Thank you for your continued interest and support.
