I need some help figuring out what is wrong with my son's 1989 Cavalier. It is
a 2 liter 4 cylinder, throttle body injection, automatic trans with 90 K on the
clock. It runs but seems to have developed a multiple personality disorder!
When it is cold and the ambient temp is cold, it idles really low to the point
that you have to keep a foot on the gas. After it gets up to the normal
operating temp it idles real fast ( 2- 3 K). If it gets warmer than it should
it begins to idle too low again. I think my son cooked the thermostat which
would account for the ocassional higher temps.
I do have a service manual for it and found that there are about nine different
sensors in the overall system. We replaced the O2 sensor a while back due to
the service engine light coming on a lot and that problem went away. It only
comes on when the idle gets so low that it is stalling...
Thanks for any help!
