Well, this afternoon I pulled the gas tank and installed the new sender for
the fuel gauge. Thanks to PPP for getting me the sender quickly and at a
reasonable cost.
While under the car, I pulled the 3.9 pumpkin and replaced it with a 4.2.
Now my speedo is off somewhat but at least the rear end isn't growling at me
anymore.
My question is:
Why was the rear growling? The gears look fine. The bearings seem OK. The
front seal was leaking a little. The sound was a steady moaning type growl
that increased with speed. At 35 MPH is was noticable. At 45 it was pretty
loud. I didn't go much faster than that.
It was noisy at cruise or acceleration, quiet on deceleration.
Did I have a lash problem or maybe a bad bearing? Any tell-tale clues to
look for?
Cheers,
Derf
