Not sure about the gaffers tape. I use it all the time at work (A/V staging)
and it is certainly good for a million things, but I am not altogether sure it
will last in the long run in "extreme environments", like under the hood.

You might check out a Theatrical Supply store either locally or on the
web... There is a 2 inch or more wide tape which is like duct tape
in strength and utility but is black cloth instead of the duct tape
silver color. It is used in theaters a lot and is called "gaffers
tape".
