I have a friend that had to have his Legacy wagon tranny rebuilt. I don't
know if it a typical problem. He was out of warranty and the factory
wouldn't agree to help in any way. He was not a happy guy. It was probably
less than 4 years old and very low miles.
Other people I know of just love them.

Hey all!
I know it's not a Miata, but does anyone have any knowledge of used Subaru
Outbacks and what to look for or avoid?
The old Ford has put herself in a position of having a repair estimate
beyond her useful value. ( And, just before Christmas!!! )
I've heard of these:
- Frequent exhaust system Y-pipe failure: replacement can cost up to $700
depending on the model. It is possible to have either a less expensive
repair done ($75 per side) or you can order a new Y-pipe and have it welded
to the old converter ($40 per side). Call: 1-800-400-3792 for information on
repairs or to order parts.
- 19982000 models: the 2.5L engine may knock excessively. Subaru has a
customer satisfaction program that pays to replace defective engines during
the warranty period, at the dealers discretion. Ask the dealer to check the
engine before the warranty expires.
TIA
