I am willing to believe that there was nothing wrong with the original
design. I am also willing to believe the overwhelming number of people who
have found that the replacement bearings for the original system are not up
to the original quality. I am one of the ones who switched to tapered Timken
bearings and I have no complaints whatsoever with over 30,000 miles,
including both long-distance runs over 70mph and several dozen autocrosses,
on them. I know that some people try to compromise and use the spacer with
the tapered bearings; this has no chance of working correctly and amounts to
a time bomb waiting to go off. Properly done, Timken tapered bearings are
more than up to the job at hand.
