Why else would you strike your phone with a hammer?  It probably
wouldn't help with reception.

The phone was struck out of frustration.  He was trying to break it.
The point is: the Nokia phone was very hard to break.  From that I
generalize: Nokia phones are very tough, some other phones are much
more fragile.
