Bugeye Windshield Seal

Getting in to more stuff on my new Bugeye.  It looks like the windscreen has 
the original glass to frame seal.  It is hard as a rock!  I think I know how 
to put a new seal in but how do you get the old one out?  I can see how I 
might cut the outside and inside edge off but does the glass extend below 
the frame?  Maybe just cut it off and caulk with some black 3M 5200?
