Apparently the characters made their stage debut (in puppet) form in 1949. They started making the move to celluloid in 1959 and became the stars of their own series in 1962. The web tells me that the show ran until 1967 and that the cartoons were syndicated up until about 1976. Beany and his uncle, the captain of the Leakin' Lena, were "voiced" by Daws Butler of Hucleberry Hound and Yogi Bear fame. Stan Freberg, one of my all-time favs, provided the voice of Cecil the Sea-Sick Sea Serpent. Cecil, apparently, had nothing to do with Sprites. Wow....Beany and Cecil..... man.....how long ago was it? :) Cap'n Bob Cecil Fan |
