Here in Illinois there is no inspection and I can buy a set of 5-year
antique plates for $30 (every Spridget ever made qualifies for them). The
only problem is getting insurance to match it. It might look a little funny
if the car is registered in IL and insured elsewhere. We probably do not
want to hear Jay's opinion, since he probably has the RIGHT answer rather
than the one we want to hear ;-)))

BTW, we were a little worried about "bending" the $250 rule, so Willy
emailed the organizers and got this response:

There is no specific rule about repairing (rebuilding) the car. Our view
is very simple, as long as the car cost less than $250 then you can do
whatever you feel is needed to make it safe to drive and safe for other
road users.
Alot of teams in S2N2004 had absolutely perfect cars and felt they were
too good at the end, especially the chaps in a Honda Civic based car
that they bounced off its rev limiter all the way through Germany (I
have a picture of them cruising at 135). The car took some real
punishment and survived perfectly. Out of 71 teams who started in 2004
only 2 cars died terminally on the way to Naples. This year, out of 90
cars that started at least 8 died on the way and 3-4 were put down
shortly afterwards (inc a big Jag that was put out of its misery when
the owner (Playboy magazine) got back to Belgium).
However, with BABE in its first year we are probably expecting a perfect
field. To be honest it'll be interesting to see how it goes as I think
alot of people are buying their wrecks and keeping them as pets
afterwards. (i'm just as guilty for this - currently have 4 cars and
cant get rid of any of them). On S2N/H2R alot of cars are bought with
the sole intention of scrapping at the destination and the teams flying
home.
Its going to be interesting to see what happens.
The key thing is to have fun.
Regards,
Justin
