Well, oil filters don't trap everything.
I mean the oil doesn't really "wear out" but still, 3 month LOF's are
recommended
for short-haul drivin'. Of course, these are
combustion contaminent related changes
to be sure.
Metal contamination is what we're really
talking about here. And the majority of this
stuff is usually really microscopic. Now what
part a nominal amount of this stuff really
plays in wear/tear over miles/time I really
don't know.
What I do know is that I'm better off with
the minimum amount of metal circulation
in the oil system and I "see" the situation
accordingly. And most certainly so considering my particular $$$ engine build.
That's why I've got a magnetic strap on my filter and a magnetized oil sump
plug. And
still, there are no 100% guarantees. Just doing the best I can do for what I've
got
invested in the motor. I mean in the aircraft
I flew we changed oil every 50hrs. and
inspected "chip" detectors accordingly. It
was all about metal contamination. So I'm
really "sensitized" in this respect.
However, if I could replace your basic street motor as easily, economically and
as conveniently as "The Frankster", I'd be inclined to take the history of the
oil cooler/last engine into consideration before purchasing a new one, I'm
sure.
