Oh great, now we are getting into politics again!
Don't forget that the original propagator of the WMD story was Saddam
himself. Having been defeated by Bush Senior, he was a bit vulnerable AND
surrounded by people who had every reason to hate him. The only defense he
had was intimidation. Therefore he tried to walk the fine line of convincing
all of his neighbors that he DID have WMDs while not convincing anybody
else. Why do you think he wouldn't let the UN inspectors go everywhere they
wanted to? He could not afford to let them prove that he did not have
nuclear capability. He finally let too much "evidence" into the wrong hands
and lost. Only so long you can walk a tightrope. Did he physically have
WMDs? Nope. Was he using imaginary WMDs? Yup.
