Hello Scott,
       the first place to check is the cable itself, .. easy, cheap.
       from the symptoms however it seems likely that the drive gear
       in the tranny is loose.... .. bummm errrrrrr...
       the best fix is to put in a 5 speed. .. that's the excuse I
       used... i couldn't get the speedo to work without pulling the
       tranny.. soooo since it was going to be out ANYWAY......
