This is a longshot question, but a "maybe".  Is the gas tank vented, and if 
so, is the vent clogged up?  If so you might be creating a vacuum and 
interrrupting gas flow after it runs a while.  That would explain it's 
myteriously 
"getting better" (after pressure inside the negative tank levels out)
