Fellow Listers,
Today I took the head off the new 1275 I put in my Bugeye during
the West Coast Osh*t meeting. After all was said and done, the head had
to come off to see why it was smoking blue oil smoke so bad. Gerard had
already suspected it and he was right. There was a head gasket
failure. One of the oil hole ferrules was the culprit. Either the
outer copper grommet was completely missing from it or is was
manufactured incorrectly. Oil migrated from the this area to the whole
left side of the head and block and was getting in the pistons. I
bought a new gasket (same type Payen) and sprayed it with copper head
gasket spray this time. So far no more smoke! So, to sum up the start
up of this new engine, the rebuilt HIF carb had to be replaced and the
head gasket failed. Now to hook up the drive shaft and have a muffler
shop make a new exhaust pipe for the header to RC40 muffler connection.
After that we drive it like we stole it!
Mike MacLean
60 Sprite (yay, no smoke!)
56 BN2 (Just line bored and now getting cylinders bored)
