The saga continues. It would appear (comparing images
in Haynes and Leland manuals) that the previous owner
did not correctly assemble the brakes on a previous
repair. The Leland manual shows a good blow up diagram
of the Right Rear wheel and the Hanyes manual shows a
good diagram of the Left Rear wheel assembly. In both
manuals it shows the rearmost brake shoe installed
with the "slot" toward the top (holding the end of the
hand brake mechanism that is closest to the rod that
engages it). It is the same in both manuals. Rearmost
shoe has slot end at the top and the larger hole to
the bottom.
In both manuals the frontmost shoe has the slot end to
the bottom and the larger holed end to the top. In
both the shoes are arranged so that the end that has
the lining closest to the end is at the top of the
rearmost shoe.
Ok. Mine were assembled bassackwards. Now comes the
puzzle part. No problem with the lower springs. I just
have to be sure that the spring coil is between the
shoe and the back plate not to the outside between the
shoe and the drum.
The top springs are, well, lets just say difficult.
They have to be on the back of the shoe with the end
that has the longest arm(outside the coil part)
running through the slot, along with the handbrake
mechanism and going the hole in the handbrake
mechanism outside the brakeshoe.(so it appears from
manuals and half fast assembly of dpo)
This is not rocket science, right? Anyone know where
some pictoral discriptions of reassembly might be; or
just briefly, How in the heck do you get the rearward
part of the top spring through the hole in the
handbrake mechanism and through the slot in the brake
shoe.
Anybody live near amarillo?
