Start up the car, keep the alternator hooked up, using a test light or
volt gauge, quickly unplug the large brown wire from the back of the
alt, hit the terminal with the light or gauge lead, if the light lights,
it's working. If the gauge reads 13-15 volts, it's fine.
Some (Lucas for sure) alternators will burn out a diode if you run them
with the battery disconnected (or the main lead to the battery from the
alt) So do it quick.
You can do the same test by removing the hot lead off the battery and
checking it to see if it has volts.
