I have posted this answer several times before. If you look at where
the pinion is in relation to the steering wheel location, it is not
directly in front of you but inboard somewhat, so the column must
come up at an angle, hence the steering wheel is not parallel to the
dash. The steering rack used id Spridgets is borrowed from the Morris
Minor and the Morris Minor steering rack is behind the wheels and
above the transmission so that the pinion come directly through the
floorboard toeplate. The column only extends from the dash to the
floorboard.
