"Forget timing it to stock specs"
Why? It's as good a starting point as any
other, all things being equal, unless you
find it simply doesn't work there and if
this is the case, you most likely have
other problems.
Agree with what you otherwise say regarding condition of dizzy parts,
etc.
The manufacturer supplied the stock
engine with an ignition advance curve
which gives a conservative "buffer"
to pre-ignition/detonation assuming
appropriate octane and reasonable
engine mechanical condition.
"Power timing" the motor could very
well lead to detonation without pre-
ignition, reducing piston crown life
dramatically under the right driving
circumstances. The trained "tail" might
pick this up as general engine
"roughness" in acceleraton up a hill
in say, 3rd or 4th.
But, even the trained ear might have
a problem unless your LBC has a very
quiet exhaust and you have the top and
windows up.
Why chance it?
Setting total timing dynamically is a
more safe way to go (the magic number
lying somewhere between 30-32 degrees
of mechanical advance for the stock motor) and especially so in these
days
of modern unleaded "garbage" octane
premiums.
