Crash was half right. A set of points in the voltage regulator was welded
shut, but that may have happened during the hasty session of generator parts
swapping and retrial last night. The hot case of the generator was caused
by a worn-through spot in the insulation on one of the generator brushes.
The exposed braid touched the armature and resulted in an intermittent short
that turned the case into a giant resistor. The entire shell would get very
hot to the touch and cool off nicely when the key was shut off. Sadly, the
regulator is now semi-fried. I'll clean the points on the original one and
hope it still works.
