I finished cleaning the metal debris out of the #3 & #4 cylinders this
week (see "Sucked into Head" thread), re-installed the head, intake
manifold, HIF6 carb & headers. Compression in all 4 cylinders now reads
about 160.
When I pulled starter, engine started immediately (YEAH!), BUT engine
immediately revved up to about 4-5,000 rpm and did not stop until I turn
key off about 10 seconds later. I had opened choke, but had not touched
the throttle at all. Engine is brand new 1380, so I am very concerned
about running at this rpm until after break-in. Also, smelled HOT;
headers were extremely hot to touch even after only running for this
short time.
Any ideas as to why it revved so high? I've checked my Haynes & Bentley
manuals but no good suggestions there, other than fast idle screw on SU
carb. Timing & distributor were set by garage that built engine,
supposedly specific to this engine, cam, etc. Should I start looking
there? Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.
Thanks,
Jim Rogers
