Sometimes (too frequently, actually) my starter, instead of engaging with
the flywheel ring gear, just jams itself on it and the two get stuck
together. I know for a fact that my ring gear is well chewed up, and I
should have replaced it at my last rebuild. My solution for now is that
whenever this happens, I put a small wrench (that I carry in the car) on the
square shaft sticking out of the front of the starter, and give it a turn or
two. This backs the starter gear away from the flywheel ring gear, and I can
try again. This usually works, and I can start the car.
So...I'm assuming there is no cure for this situation other than to do what
I should have done in the first place: bite the bullet and go for a new ring
gear. Well...someday.
Thoughts?
