depending on the sealer/adhesive used in the last assembly it could be
literally glued to the block.  but!  since you are this far why not finish
the job?  try to get a putty knife between the block and pan and begin
seperating 1 side, the other side will usually yeild after 1 side has been
freed.     the down part of the operation will be removing the remaining
shards of gasket wich will be "glued" to both the block and pan rails.
traditionally most gaskets are adhered to 1 surface or the other.  people
who have had past experiences in leakage tend to seal the heck out of any
gasketed surface.   in some cases greasing or oiling a gasket is sufficient
for a proper seal(also aids removal at any later date!)!
