Well, Bob...
With all due respect, one of the reasons
for deployment of military personnel would lie in the last paragraph of
your
response to my original post on this
subject.
My point, actually, is that the government
is into "appearances" and not taking our
security as seriously as it "appears".
(Guess cheap labor is more important as in "corporate motives"?).
I don't pretend to know but national security is really more of a
pretense than
anything else. I mean stories on the INS
etc. and other federal agency irresponsibility in these respects surface
almost monthly these days.
I am not necessarily advocating shooting
anyone but it would be made clear that with the deployment of military
personnel
to protect the nation's borders would come a world-wide sort of
declaration that
due to "9/11 circumstances, illegal entry
into our nation will now be met with the
understanding that anyone doing so would
be considered an enemy and would be dealt with, with predjudice becoming
exactly that.....IOW a wll-announced change in policy would accompany
same.
Otherwise, it's all a lot of "verbal masturbation". I, for one, have
stopped
caring about it. At this point I am taking
it exactly as seriously as government
is taking it.....which is to say, not too
seriously. They sure as hell are not as
serious about it as they "appear" to be! :)

Actaually,
I do understand this. Border Patrol and police in general are trained to be
"police" and to enforce laws in a fairly peaceable manner. Soldiers of any
sort, God bless them, are trained primarily to kill the enemy. 99% of the
folks sneaking across the border are farm workers, maids, or merely relatives
coming for a visit.
No, I don't think we should let them come across, but the answer, at this
point in time is not the military. Perhaps some economic pressure on Mexico
to stop it from their side. It should have been part of NAFTA.
The Border Patrol ranks have also been decimated by the creation of TSA and
many jumped to new jobs there as a way to get promoted....air marshalls make
big $.
