Some of the new pumps are larger in diameter on one or two of the corners
where the hold-down bolts go. And you're right, they hit the cover and won't
let it go on fully. This is correctable by grinding the offending corner(s)
for clearance. Be aware, too, that these newer pumps can also be thinner than
the old. If you use the old bolts, they will bottom before the pump is
pulled fully down to the block, leaving a big gap that will give zero oil
pressure! Shorter bolts will solve this.
