The "right way" would be to use a 1/4 leaf sprung wire wheel rear axle
casing and axle shafts. 
But for regular driving, wire axle shafts will work fine in a steel
wheel case. I had a 69 Sprite i converted this way, I drove it hard, in
fact I even stripped out a wire, I never had any axle length problems.
But I did NOT use it on the race track.
