I've always used a come-along. Engine and tranny together. One tooth at a time
watch the front valance, watch the battery box, one tooth at a time, easier with
two people, one tooth at a time, roll the car back a bit, one tooth at a time,
roll the car back a little more, when it's clear, lower it onto a plywood dolly
and you're all set.

Installation is the reverse of the above, except you have to bleed the slave. 
:-)

Splitting the engine and tranny is a PITA.
