too warm engine

I am putting a 1275 in the Bugeye and am planning on putting the temp sending 
bulb into the head, instead of in the radiator. In any case , I have to plug 
one hole or the other. What would be the size thread plug to get? Is it a 
hardware store item?Spacer needed?--------Bob in Kansas
