I once did a ride-a-long with the Akron Police -- 8 hours, overnight shift,
worst part of town. The second-biggest heroes of the night: the Ford Crown
Victoria Police Interceptors. Holy crap do those things take a beating! I'd
swear they don't have a gas or brake pedal, just a switch marked "Go" and
"Stop." The officers I was with told me that every cruiser gets new brake
pads with every 3,000 mile oil change. The K-9 units actually get driven
less hard, but the back seats are usually trashed very quickly, antsy German
Shepherds not being one of nature's more gentle species. Moral of the story:
used police cars are usually very, very tired. And they often smell kinda
funky.
Oh, the biggest heroes of the night: the German Shepherds, which sniffed out
a bad guy at a breaking and entering at 4 a.m. (Then, not realizing their
work was done, they almost proceeded to tear me to shreds. Good doggie!)
