Bob,
"Syntec is actually regular oil that has been through a hydro-crack process
which makes it act somewhat like a synthetic oil, and while its better than
regular oil, it doesn't provide nearly as much protection as a pure synthetic
like Mobil 1."
-> Agreed
"It has been my personal observation that Mobil 1 20W-50 is much thinner and
pours easier in cold weather than regular 10W-40 oil"
-> I Agree
"However, synthetic oils tend to find leaks where there are
none, and make little leaks much bigger. "
-> Hence, the Syntec compromise. It doesn't flow as well as Mobil 1, but it
doesn't find the holes as quickly either. Yet it's better than using a regular
oil. And if for some reason, you need oil in a hurry on a trip (and the spares
we all carry isn't enough), the Syntec will cooperate with Castrol GTX better
than a Mobil 1. Of course, this is emergency only.
