You just take a length of broomstick, put one end to your ear and the other
pressed on the engine in various spots. The area of the knocking will come
through loud and clear by listening to the broom stick. Just don't get it
near the fan blades or belt.
The alternative is an inexpensive, under $10 mechanics stethoscope, which can
be found at Harbor freight. But the broom stick method works well.
