The problem may not be the seals. The factory didn't put any on the exhaust
stems and as you mentioned the o-ring style on the intakes are pretty
minimal.
Try wiggling the valve stems north/south and east/west with the springs
removed to see if you have excess play in the guides. It has to be worn
rings or guides; or the ever popular PCV system.
